Right, so here’s the thing with edible oil bottles that trips up a lot of buyers: a 3-litre or 5-litre oil bottle isn’t just a big water bottle. It needs a handle — and that handle has to be mechanically bonded to the bottle body, not just clipped on after the fact. A loose clip-on handle on a 5-litre bottle of cooking oil is a lawsuit waiting to happen. You can clip one on after blowing (cheap, but the handle can pull free under load), or you can blow the bottle around a pre-placed handle so the PET literally encapsulates the handle anchor points during the blow cycle. The HGA.JS-2CB152 uses an asymmetric thermal management system: 128 preform positions in the heating station versus 10 in the blow station. This isn’t a typo — it means the preforms spend significantly more time in temperature conditioning before they’re blown, which is critical for large-format handle bottles. Thick-walled preforms for 3-litre oil bottles take longer to heat evenly through their cross-section than a standard 500 ml water bottle preform. Is PET actually safe for edible oil? I’ve heard it can leach.

The concern about leaching typically relates to antimony trioxide (a PET catalyst) — and yes, PET does contain trace antimony, but measured migration into vegetable oils at room temperature is well below regulatory limits (Sb migration limit is 0.04 mg/kg under EU rules; typical PET oil bottles migrate at 0.002–0.008 mg/kg in ambient storage). My filling line uses gravity or pressure filling — is there anything special about these bottles for filling compatibility?

Neck dimensions are the critical spec for filling head compatibility — we recommend you confirm your filling head diameter against the neck range for your target model before ordering molds. The FS-2C200 and JS-series models produce bottles with 46–58 mm necks, which is compatible with standard wide-neck gravity and vacuum filling heads used on edible oil lines. What’s the handle made from, and do we need to source it separately?

Yes — the handle is a separate injection-molded PP or HDPE component that’s placed into the blow mold before each cycle. It’s not produced by this machine; it comes from a standard injection molder and is typically a simple, low-cost part (the handle geometry is standard across many oil bottle designs). The machine operator places the handle in the mold at the start of each cycle, or a robotic arm can do it on higher-automation setups. The handle mold design needs to be done in conjunction with your blow mold design — we handle that coordination as part of the mold package.

Can I use recycled PET (rPET) for food-contact oil bottles?

Mechanically recycled rPET for food contact is regulated market by market, and the rules differ quite a bit. In the EU, recycled PET can be used for food contact if it’s processed through an EFSA-approved decontamination process. In the US, FDA applies a similar case-by-case approach. In Australia and NZ, FSANZ references EU and FDA guidance. For edible oil specifically, the higher fat content increases potential migration, so regulators typically require stronger evidence of decontamination efficacy for oil-contact rPET vs. water-contact applications. Practically: virgin PET is simpler for oil bottles from a compliance standpoint, but rPET is doable with the right supply chain and documentation. We’d recommend starting with virgin PET and transitioning to rPET once your quality and compliance systems are set up for it.

What’s the realistic payback period on one of these machines vs. buying pre-made oil bottles?

It depends entirely on your volume and your current bottle cost, but the maths tends to work out if you’re using more than about 1.5–2 million bottles per year. At that scale, your per-bottle cost from the machine (raw material + energy + amortised machine cost) is typically 35–55% lower than buying ready-made bottles from a third party, because you’re cutting out the third-party margin and the freight on empty bulky containers.
