Why Baby Bottles and Craft Containers Are the Trickiest Bottles to Blow Mould — and Why This Series Handles Them Well

Most blow moulding machines are optimised for one thing: high output on a standard bottle shape. Shampoo bottles, water bottles, oil jugs — round cross-section, consistent wall, predictable material behaviour. That’s fine for commodity production. But baby bottles, craft flacons, and special-shaped containers are a completely different engineering challenge.

Baby feeding bottles in PP or Tritan need to process at higher temperatures than PET (PP melts at around 160–170°C, PPSU higher again), they often have wide necks that don’t stretch the same way a narrow beverage bottle does, and the finished container has to meet infant safety standards that most packaging isn’t tested against — no BPA, no heavy metal migration, no surface defects that could harbour bacteria.

Craft and decorative bottles add a different layer of difficulty: faceted surfaces, embossed patterns, asymmetric profiles, flat or oval cross-sections. These shapes require very precise preform conditioning because any hot spot in the preform will blow out unevenly, ruining the surface detail the mould is designed to capture.

Polypropylene is the most widely used material for baby feeding bottles globally — microwave-safe, heat-resistant to 120°C, free from BPA, and approved under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for food contact. PP processes at 160–170°C melt temperature, which requires barrel and screw configurations tuned for higher-viscosity melt flow compared to PET. Tritan from Eastman Chemical is the premium BPA-free choice for sippy cups, children’s water bottles, and reusable sports bottles. It offers glass-like clarity, dishwasher resistance (top rack, repeated cycles), and impact strength well above standard PET. Processing temperature runs 260–290°C — higher than PP or PET — and the material is particularly well-suited to special-shaped containers because it flows precisely into complex mould geometries with minimal distortion.

Polyphenylsulfone is the material of choice for the premium end of the baby bottle market — amber-tinted, autoclavable at 134°C, and completely free from BPA, BPS, and phthalates. PPSU processes at 340–380°C and requires specialised high-temperature barrel insulation and screw alloys. Bottles produced from PPSU carry a significant price premium in retail, making even low-cavity output (700–1,000 bph on FS-series models) commercially viable.

The HGA.P Models Have Barrel Configurations Specifically for PP and High-Temperature Resins

Standard ISBM machines are tuned for PET, which melts at around 260°C. PP runs at 160–170°C but behaves very differently — it’s more viscous, it cools faster, and it needs more consistent conditioning to blow evenly without cold spots. The HGA.P models in this series use extended conditioning dwell times and independently controlled heating zones to manage PP’s narrower processing window. The same applies to PPSU, which processes at 340–380°C and needs high-temperature barrel alloys that standard PET machines can’t handle without degrading the material.

In a two-stage process, preforms are stored in open hoppers, transported on conveyors, and fed into a second machine — every one of those steps is an opportunity for dust, particulate, or microbial contamination to enter the bottle cavity.
