How Does an IBM Injection Blow Molding Machine Work?

IBM (Injection Blow Molding) runs a 3-station rotary cycle with no stretch rod and no preform reheating. All three stations operate simultaneously every cycle — injecting, blowing, and stripping at the same time — keeping dry cycle times at 3.5–4 seconds for hydraulic models and 2.5 seconds on the fully electric ZQ60HE.

IBM vs. ISBM — what’s the difference? IBM (Injection Blow Molding) uses a 3-station rotary process with no stretch rod — suited to HDPE, PP, PS, and PC containers where neck precision and zero scrap matter most. ISBM (Injection Stretch Blow Molding) adds an axial stretch rod and is optimised for PET clarity bottles. The ZQ Series are IBM machines — the same technology used by Jomar, BLOMA, SUMA, and Uniloy in their IBM lines.

ISB Injection Blow Molding Machine OPEARTING PRINCIPLE
01
Injection

Stock Preparation & Injection

Plastic pellets (HDPE, PP, PET, PS, PC, etc.) feed into the injection barrel via the auto-loader. The screw melts and meters the resin, then injects it at controlled pressure around the core rod — forming a precise preform inside the injection mold at Station 1.

02
Blow Molding

Turret Rotation & Blow Molding

The rotary table indexes the preform — still on the core rod, still retaining injection heat — to the blow station. No reheating is needed; wall temperature stays uniform from inner to outer surface. Pressurised air (0.7–1.2 MPa) expands the preform against the blow mold cavity, forming the final bottle shape. Wall thickness uniformity reaches ±1%, versus 10–20% variation typical of extrusion blow.

03
Stripping

Cooling & Ejection

Mold cooling water circuits solidify the bottle. The rotary table indexes once more to the stripping station, where finished bottles eject cleanly onto the outfeed conveyor — with no flash trimming, no bottom weld line, and no secondary handling required. Zero scrap on every cycle.

ZQ Series — Full Specification Comparison

All models share the same European-style frame, 22:1 L/D screw, and 3-station IBM process. Select by clamping force and cavity requirement.

IBM vs. Extrusion Blow Molding — Which Process Fits Your Line?

Not all blow molding is the same. Here’s an honest comparison of why IBM (injection blow) and EBM (extrusion blow) each exist — and which situations favour each technology.

# Comparison Factor Injection Blow (IBM) — ZQ Series Extrusion Blow (EBM)
1 Bottle Weight Consistency ±1% shot-to-shot weight variation ±3% typical weight variation
2 Wall Thickness Uniformity Highly uniform — controlled by preform 10–20% wall thickness variation
3 Bottle Neck / Thread No flash, no pinch-off — flat and precise Pinch-off seam reduces base strength
4 Bottom Convexity Clean, even convexity — no weld line Poor convexity, weld line at base
5 Material Waste / Scrap Zero production scrap 20–40% parison trim scrap
6 Minimum Wall Thickness Limited on very thin walls Controller-adjustable for thin walls
7 Environmental Sensitivity Low sensitivity — stable in variable conditions Frequent adjustment needed
8 Cavitation & Output High cavity count, flat neck finish Fewer cavities, uneven neck finish
9 Mold Service Life Long service life — suitable for long runs Shorter mold life — lower tooling cost entry
10 Machine Footprint Compact, few auxiliaries needed Larger footprint with more peripheral equipment
11 Oval / Complex Shapes More difficult to form non-round cross-sections Easier to produce oval or irregular bottles

Bottom line: If your priority is neck accuracy, zero waste, high cavitation, and pharmaceutical or food-grade compliance — IBM is the right process. If you need very thin walls, large oval containers, or extremely low tooling investment for short runs, EBM may be worth considering instead.
